The Studio Theatre is a public theatrical institution subordinated to the University of Theatrical Art of Tîrgu-Mureș. Its main purpose is to promote locally and regionally the product of the drama school: graduates of acting, directing, theatre science and musical pedagogy classes. Since its inauguration in October 1962, the Studio Theatre has turned into a nucleus, attracting not only students and professors, but also the public of Tîrgu-Mureș, and has thus acquired true professional status. Since its inauguration in October 1962, the Studio Theatre has turned into a nucleus, attracting not only students and professors, but also the public of Tîrgu-Mureș, and has thus acquired true professional status.

During its first theatrical season, conducted by György Kovács, Lajos Kămí­ves Nagy and Géza Gergely, the Studio Theatre had 19,864 spectators in 105 public performances. Masters such as Lajos Szabó, László Tarr, Imre Nagy, Miklós Tompa, Constantin Codrescu, András Csorba, Calin Florian, Loránd Lohinszky, Dan Alecsandrescu, Levente Kovács, Constantin Doljan and others confirmed their vocation and talent by shaping young actors. Throughout its 45 years existence, the Studio Theatre put on performances of major Romanian and universal plays. After 1976, when the Romanian section of the University was reorganized, its repertoire, with three or four opening nights every season, included well-known authors such as I.L.Caragiale, A.P.Cehov, V.Alecsandri, A.Strindberg, Mircea ștefanescu, Bertolt Brecht, H.Ibsen, W.Shakespeare, Moliere, Marin Sorescu, Mihail Sebastian, Eugen Ionesco, C.Goldoni, as well as hopefuls like Andreea Vălean, Biljana Sbrljanovic.

The Studio theater is an educational institution as well as a place for artistic creation for graduate students, and their professors. In recent years, the Academic Workshop, aiming to fructify the creativity of the faculty members, has acquired exceptional performances by participating in national and international festivals and receiving numerous prizes. The Studio Theater of the Tîrgu-Mureș University of Theatrical Art was fully remodelled in 2006 and provided with state-of-the-art stage technical equipment: mixing table, micro ports, an installation for simultaneous translations with headphones, new tailor”™s, locksmith”™s, carpenter”™s workshops, as well as a scene painting workshop.
