The Natural Sciences Museum Building
One of the most beautiful neo-classic buildings in Tîrgu-Mureș was built between 1890 and 1893 as seat of the Seklar Museum of Crafts . The building was designed by architect Kiss Istvan of Budapest, and the works were supervised by Sófalvi József and Soós Pál of Tîrgu-Mureș. The characteristics of the main façade are the austerity and symmetry specific to neo-classical architecture. The main part of the building, having two floors, is flanked by two other buildings with one floor each. There are two niches, one in each of the lateral wings underneath a small triangular gable, holding two allegorical statues: industry and agriculture. The lower part of the central building is a reminiscence of a Renaissance palace, as shown by the embossing and the three semicircular openings :the central door and the two large windows. The upper part is more richly decorated and harmoniously combines classical architectural elements. There are small railings underneath the three large, semicircular windows. The windows are flanked by pilasters with composite caps. Between these, a frieze of vegetal wreaths unfolds along the façade. The entire central part of the façade is crowned by a triangular gable decorated with bronze sculptures authored by Rona Jozséf simbolizing the support of the state to the industry. The Seklar Museum of Crafts and Industry was inaugurated here in 1893, soon after the building was finalized. The building would also serve as a boarding school for a period of time. Starting with 1957 a new museum was established in the building, namely the County Museum of Tîrgu-Mureș. An eclectic exhibition was first presented to the public, including industrial art, history, crafts and ethnography. Later, a history exhibition took its place (starting from the Neolithic until the end of the feudal organization). Since 1988, the building has been hosting the Natural Sciences Museum.
