Vatra Review

The VATRA review is a cultural review well-known in the Romanian and foreign cultural and scientific ambient. Vatra review illustrates several areas of scientific research such as literary history, theory and critique, in which its editors excel. Established in 1894 by I.L. Caragiale, Ioan Slavici and George Cosbuc, the review was published bi-monthly, having the size and shape of a book and a heterogenous content. Its target readers were the relatively cultivated middle class and Transylvanian intellectuals. The new series of VATRA was published starting with 1971 in Tirgu Mures under the coordination of Romulus Guga. It was published monthly and was newspaper-sized. The review”™s content is more specialized and various, its target group being intellectuals specialized or interested in Humanities. In the 1980s VATRA strived to cultivate and preserve a minimal freedom of speech and to promote authentic values despite the ideological intrusion of the totalitarian regime. The review kept unaltered its main principles (its value criteria, aesthetic autonomy, civic spirit) after 1989. In 1995 VATRA was restored to its book-like shape, radically changed its structure to be better adapted to all that was new and published remarkable texts by Romanian and foreign writers and researchers. VATRA is of great importance for the Romanian literary, cultural and scientific life, as shown in the comments and opinions on the review included in some of the main lexicographical works dedicated to the Romanian press: Ion Hangiu, Dicționarul presei literare românești (Dictionary of Romanian Literary Press)1987, Ion Hangiu, Dicționarul revistelor literare românești (Dictionary of Romanian Literary Reviews)(1790-1990), 1996, Dicționarul general al literaturii române (General Dictionary of Romanian Literature), 2004-2006, Iulian Negrilă, Istoria presei (History of the Press), 1997, Marian Petcu, Structura presei românești (Structure of the Romanian Press), 2001, Marian Petcu, Istoria Presei românești (History of Romanian Press) 2003, Vasile Pasailă, Presa în istoria modernă a românilor (The Press in the Modern History of the Romanians), 2004. For its outstanding cultural contributions, the VATRA review has been awarded several prestigious prizes. The review”™s editorial office includes members of the Academy, prestigious foreign and Romanian professors. Among its contributors are prestigious Romanian cultural personalities, as well as foreign teachers and researchers. Many issues of VATRA were reviewed in cultural reviews from Romania and from abroad.
