The Teleki Library

The establishment of the Teleki Library in Tîrgu-Mureș in 1802 was an important moment in the city”™s cultural life. Teleki Sámuel, who initiated the project, was an accomplished erudite, a graduate of the most prestigious European universities. His polyvalent interests are reflected by his collection of books that are nowadays true patrimonial values. The books were bought or received from more than 25 European cities. When the library was inaugurated, Teleki was already in Vienna as aulic chancellor, but had hired librarians with whom he constantly exchanged letters.  The most valuable volumes – due to their age - kept at the Teleki - Bolyai Library are the 66 incunabula. The Metamorphoses by Ovidiu, published in Venice in 1493, Liber de homine (Book about man) by Galeottus Martius, published in 1745 in Bologna, Genealogiae deorum (Genealogy of the Gods) by Boccaccio dating from 1497, Epistolae by Hieronymus (1496) are but a few of them.s The collection also includes copies of classic Roman authors, dating from the 17th century: Titus Livius, Iulius Caesar, Tertullian, Tacitus or Cicero, as well as the Christian writings of Saint Hyeronimus, John Chrysostom or Saint Ambrosius. Sciences such as natural history, physics, chemistry, astronomy, mathematics have their own place in the library”™s collection which includes first editions of the works of Galilei, Copernicus, Newton, Laplace etc. Teleki also collected handwritten doctoral theses, scientific, literary or history periodicals, original documents etc. His passion for books drove him to appeal to the most famous publishing houses in the country and abroad (e.g. publishing houses of Aldus Manutius, Giunta, Estienne, Plantin, Elzevir, Honterus etc.) Writings by Romanian and Hungarian authors can also be found in the Teleki Library: The Bible of Serban Cantacuzino printed in Bucharest in 1688, Histoire de l'Empire Othoman by Dimitrie Cantemir, History for the Beginnings of the Romanians in Dacia  by Petru Maior, Sanitatis studium  by Paulus Kir, the oldest medical book to be published in our country, in Brașov-1551, Dictionary and Grammar of the Tibetan Language by Korosi Csoma Sandor. By adding his wife Zsuzsanna Bethlen”™s book collection of 2000 volumes, which was conserved entirely, Teleki's book collection amounted to 40,000 volumes. The room where the books are held was designed for this purpose and is kept intact, as it was left by its founder, with its original furniture and decorations, representing in itself a tourist attraction. In time, the library expanded by means of donations or purchasing of other book funds. The most significant of these was the fund of the Reformed College, including 80,000 volumes, among which numerous manuscripts of the two Bolyais. Other funds in its custody are those of the Roman Catholic Gymnasium, the Franciscan Monastery of Calugareni (Mureș County), the Protestant gymnasiums of Cristurul Secuiesc and Orăștie. Today, the Teleki-Bolyai Library holds over 250,000 books. In addition to ensuring public access to the library, the conservation and restoration of old books are priorities of the library”™s specialized personnel. In the library”™s right wing, on the ground floor, a Bolyai memorial room was arranged, displaying personal objects, manuscripts and various editions of the works of the two mathematicians.
