The “Petru Maior” Municipal Library of Reghin

The beginnings of the “Petru Maior” Municipal Library lie in the establishment in 1950 of the Town Library which for a period of time was named Central District Library as it supervised the village libraries belonging to the district of Reghin. The library was inaugurated on October 20, 1950. Its beginning was modest. The initial fund of the library was made up of 210 brochures from the People”™s Athenaeum, to which 2000 copies were added in November 1950 from the former Committee for Cultural Establishments, so that by the end of 1950 the library had 2210 volumes, counted 338 readers and 2100 books read, having only one librarian.  The first seat of the library was a modest room in the building next to the "Alexandru Ceusianu” Middle School. Later, it moved to the Cultural Club. The library has had its current headquarters on George Cosbuc Street since 1955. Its first librarian was Mircea Leon who established a modern, functional library, highly appreciated by readers. Once created, the library of Reghin established itself in the life of the community by permanently and systematically enhancing its funds of current and retrospective publications. From having one room in 1950, by 1970 the library”™s space increased to 9 rooms, whereas it currently holds 14 spacious halls. From the 2210 books the library had in 1950, its funds grew to 120,000 publications which largely satisfy the information and research requirements of the readers of Reghin. Readers may find various reference works (encyclopaedia, dictionaries, lexicons) among which are Enciclopedia României în patru volume (The Romanian Encyclopaedia in Four Volumes) (1936-1943), Encicolpedia Română în trei volume (The Romanian Encyclopaedia in three volumes), Dicționarul enciclopedic ilustrat (The Illustrated Encyclopedic Dictionary), Cartea Românească 1931, Enciclopedia Română Minerva (Minerva Romanian Encyclopaedia) (1930), Meyer – Konversation lexicon (1889-1890), A Pallas Nagy Lexikona in 18 volumes, Revai Nagy Lexikona, Revai Nagy Lexikona in 21 volumse, Dicționarul Larousse (The Larousse Dictionary), Dicționarul tehnic roman (Technical Romanian Dictionary), Enciclopedia Britanica 29 volumes plus 2  index volumes, Magyar Nagylexikon (1999. The library has subscriptions to over 42 newspapers and magazines. The library also has a foreign book department and a collection of periodicals held in a separate building, as well as a documentary fund of old books, magazine collections and other valuable works in more than 4000 volumes which was set up in 1967 and is highly appreciated by specialists.  The oldest publication in the library is the Code of Justinian (1551), followed by Almanach de Gotha (1886), Lexicon trilinque latino-hungarico-germanicum (1818), a collection of the Transilvania review, issues of the Familia, Convorbiri Literare reviews, numerous books of history, geography, philosophy and literature. As of 1962 readers have been able to choose books directly from the shelves of the adult books lending department, and in 1964 the children and youth department was established.
