The Unitarian Church

The Unitarian Church was built between 1929 and 1930 next to the old Unitarian prayer house dating from 1869. The existence of the Unitarian faith in Tîrgu-Mureș is linked to the name of Ferenc Dávid, its founder and the first Unitarian bishop. The political circumstances in Transylvania become favorable for Ferenc Dávid”™s activity due to the Dieta (i.e. legislative assemblies) of Turda held between 1557 and 1568 which granted freedom of faith to all religions in Transylvania. The Unitarianism becomes religio-recepta together with all the other Protestant faiths. The king of the state himself, Ioan Sigismund, adopted it. It appears that the Unitarians of Tîrgu-Mureș had a prayer house and even a church, which were destroyed during the political tumoil around the year 1600. The following centuries were not favorable to the expansion of the new religion due to forced catholicization or reformation, the seizing of the churches and censorship. Only in 1869, the Unitarians of Tîrgu-Mureș were finally able to build a prayer house and an inn at the corner of Bolyai and Borsos Tamás streets. Its architectural style, namely neo-gothic, is in line with the trend of romantic architecture of that period. A church was built next to the prayer house between 1929 and 1930, also neo-gothic in style, in order to maintain the unity of the architectural concept of the two buildings. As it is placed in a busy urban area, the church's plan is atypical. The longer side of the church is aligned with the row of houses that existed at that time and parallel to the street. The nave is on the top floor, above offices and a conference hall. There are two entrance doors from the street: one is on the bottom level of the tower and leads to the nave, whereas the other one can be found in the middle area of the façade and leads to the offices below the nave. The architectural elements are typical to the gothic style, but adapted to new construction materials. Thus, the windows have triangular openings on the top part, deriving from gothic broken arch openings, as is the one on the portal to the tower. The tower has a four-lobed rosette, and a triangular gable on each side of the roof area. The interior is simple, with no elements of religious art, as these are forbidden by the Unitarian faith. The only decorations are the belts painted with floral motives marking the veins of the archways or certain outlines.
