The Art School of Tîrgu-Mureș began to function in 1954 continuing a rich tradition of artistic education in Tirgu Mures. As early as 1908, a school of arts and crafts existed in the city. In 1922 the Municipal Conservatory was established, but ceased to exist in 1949. The Free Course of Fine Arts was initiated in 1932 by painter Aurel Ciupe and functioned until 1940. It changed its name several times: “People”™s Art School”, “The Art School” and the “People”™s Arts and Crafts School”. Until 1978, its classes were held in the Palace of Culture. The school later moved to the Apollo Palace where it still functions. The mission of the institution is to support permanent education, traditional culture and folk creation. Its classes are divided into four main categories: -Music: Classical canto, folk and pop music, piano, violin, guitar, accordion, synthesizer, drums, wind instruments, choir direction-Visual Arts: painting, graphics, sculpture, design, decorative art, tapestry, stained-glass painting, photography - Choreography: contemporary ballet, classic ballet, dancing, catwalk movement, step-rhythm, folk dances - Theater: drama, puppeteering, directing. The Art School is an educational institution open to all social categories, regardless of age, nationality, race, sex, religion or political views, with or without prior specialized knowledge.It thus supports the cultivation of folk values and the authenticity of contemporary folk art, the development of the interpretative art in all its areas, and last but not least stimulating creativity and talent so that people may develop freely and adapt to major evolutions within our society.
