The Writers”™ Union of Romania was established in 1949 and its Tîrgu-Mureș branch came into being in 1968. The first Romanian writers to be part of the Tîrgu-Mureș branch of the Writers”™ Union of Romania were Zeno Ghitulescu and Romulus Guga, followed by Mihai Sin and Dan Culcer. The Tîrgu-Mureș branch had only one section until 1995, after which its structure changed to two sections: a Romanian and a Hungarian one. In time, Romanian writers that were members of the Writers' Union branch set up literary circles (the "Liviu Rebreanu" Literary Circle, then the "Romulus Guga" Literary Circle), published their works in collective anthologies, as well as books that had a remarkable impact on local and national level. An important event in the activity of the Mureș branch of the Writers”™ Union was the publishing of the “Vatra” review, whose new series was initiated in 1971. The most important Romanian writers in this geographical area contributed to the review which thus supported the affirmation of literary and cultural values within the Tîrgu-Mureș branch of the Writers' Union. Another significant cultural periodical was the “Târnava” review. The secretaries of the Romanian section of the Writers”™ Union Tîrgu-Mureș branch have been: Cornel Moraru (1995-2001) and Zeno Ghițulescu (2001-2005). In 2005 Zeno Ghițulescu became president of the Tîrgu-Mureș branch of the Writers”™ Union of Romania, a position that he holds to the present.
