The Bolyai Highschool Building
The current appearance of the Bolyai Highschool Building of Tîrgu-Mureș is the result of several construction stages which started in 1802 and ended at the beginning of the 20th century. The old reformed school in the fortress, Schola Particula, established in 1557, moved to Bolyai street in the 17th century. In 1718 the institution was upgraded to college and assimilated the students and teachers of the Reformed College of Sarospatak, who fled to Tirgu Mures to escape retaliations in the Hapsburg Empire. The buildings where the College had functioned before were demolished and replaced with newer ones. The oldest part of the Bolyai Highschool building, as we see it today, is the one facing Kogalniceanu street. In 1800 there was a rundown wooden building here used as boarding school. That is why in 1802 construction works started on an appropriate building. The masons in charge were: Schmidt Constantin, Sommer Ioan and Jakabfi Tamás. The building was designed to be a boarding school, as shown in the inscription above the door to the corridor: Internatus. The plan is rectangular, with one wing longer than the other, and includes a basement, a ground floor and two floors. The building is entered through a passage door. This leads to a long corridor from which one can enter the seven rooms placed in a row. The exterior is simple, with no particular decorations. Above the entrance there is a small bell tower. A new wing was built in 1871, facing Bolyai street. The central part, which is the most significant as far as size and style are concerned, was built between 1908 and 1909 based on the plans of Budapest architect Baumgarten Sandor. This was one of the first Secession-style buildings in Tîrgu-Mureș. Being a teaching institution with such a long tradition, it has had its share of remarkable teachers, such as: Kovásznai Sándor, Köteles Sámuel and Bolyai Farkas, after whom it was named in 1957. Future personalities of Hungarian, as well as Romanian culture studied at the Bolyai college. Illuminists Gheorghe șincai and Petru Maior were present here.
